Delta's Founder Bruce Cheng Shares His Views on Low-Carbon Buildings and Transportation at the Closing Ceremony of EcoMobility World Congress 2017
Delta, a global leader in power and thermal management solutions, announced today its founder, Bruce Cheng, addressed the closing ceremony of the EcoMobility World Congress 2017 with a speech titled “Climate Change Mitigation: Sustainability Development in Mobility”. He was invited to speak by the hosts, the Kaohsiung City Government and the ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability). Mr. Cheng shared his experience leading Delta in its development of energy-saving technologies for buildings, transportation and energy storage with policy makers from 50 global cities. The speech recalled Mr. Cheng’s talks at Delta-organized side events at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in which policy makers learned about the contributions to sustainability from Taiwanese corporations.

Mr. Bruce Cheng emphasized, “Reducing carbon dioxide emissions from buildings and transportation is critical to achieving mankind’s goal of containing global temperature rise within 2°C. According to estimations by the IPCC, the energy savings potential of buildings is 50% to 75%, and Delta’s efforts in creating 25 green buildings across the globe are in line with this research. E-mobility is now the next frontier in the fight for lower carbon emissions, with several countries setting up specific targets that imply 70% of all new vehicles will be electric by 2050. EV charging infrastructure, which is a key factor in EVs becoming mainstream, is also one of Delta’s rapidly growing businesses.”

Delta’s multi-year endeavors in EV charging include the development of AC and DC chargers capable of supporting key regions of the world such as Europe, the USA, Japan and China. Power output is currently up to 150kW (350kW and higher in the near future), which means a 180km range for an EV is possible after only a 15-min charge. Delta’s charging site management system helps optimize energy use in this growingly critical industry. Notable success stories for Delta’s EV Charging Solutions include a series of smart AC EVSE (EV Supply Equipment) developed in collaboration with the US Dept. of Energy, and installations in Holland and Norway. In Taiwan, the official dealer for BMW selected Delta’s technology for their growing EV charging network across Taipei City and at the Taipei 101 building.

Street lighting is another critical industry for sustainable cities. Delta’s LED lighting technology supports cities across the planet, with up to 470,000 LED streetlights installed, out of which approximately 300,000 support cities in Taiwan. In Kaohsiung, we have installed close to 40,000 streetlights, reaching the highest market share in the city. Delta has also developed multi-functional streetlights that integrate LED lighting with wireless communication, EV charging and vehicle plate recognition, as well as digital signage to fulfill various needs while maximizing safety.

Delta built its first green building, the Tainan Plant I, in 2006 and as of today the company has created 25 green buildings around the world. In 2016, our certified green buildings achieved energy savings of 15.2 million kWh, equal to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 10,027 tons. Our flagship green building, located in California, USA, which houses Delta’s HQs for the Americas region, achieved net-zero energy status in the month of July through the combination of our own energy-saving solutions and solar energy generation. One of our most noteworthy green buildings is the eco-friendly campus donated to the Namasia Elementary School following the destruction of its original campus by typhoon Morakot in 2009. This facility offered an Energy Use Intensity (EUI) reading of only 7, but further installation of solar PV energy capacity and energy storage systems transformed the building into Taiwan’s first net-zero energy campus.

The EcoMobility World Festival & Congress is organized by the ICLEI every two years and its goal is to nurture new sustainability ideas with the international community. The 2017 event is held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and extends for the entire month of October. The Delta Electronics Foundation responded to the invitation of the Kaohsiung City Government by hosting the “Delta Green Building Exhibition”, the largest environmental education event at the Congress and a showcase of Delta’s next-generation technologies to enable low-carbon buildings and transportation.
